Course Contents
Lectures
Introduction to the microbial world, cell structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms, nutrition and culture of microorganisms (requirements for macrotrophic and microtrophic elements), basic principles of metabolic processes of microorganisms, microbial growth and culture methods (batch and open culture systems), factors affecting microbial growth, methods of controlling microbial growth, microorganism-human interactions, basic characteristics of viruses, industrial applications of microorganisms for the production of value-added products.
Laboratory courses/exercises
- Culture media preparation.
- Sterilization – Aseptic techniques.
- Culture inoculation.
- Isolation of microorganisms.
- Microbial population estimation- serial dilution method.
- Biochemical tests.
- Microscopy – Staining techniques.
Educational Goals
The course aims to introduce students to the basic principles of microbiology. At the end of the course, students will have understood the basic principles of the biology of microorganisms and the fundamental principles of their structure and function. In addition, through the laboratory exercises, the students will familiarize with the means and methods of handling microbiological material.
