Course Contents
- Introduction (importance of agriculture, development, natural resources, Greek agriculture).
- Cultivated plants (evolution-spread, classification, plant parts and physiological functions, plant productivity.
- Plant and environment (soil factors, climatic factors, energy factor, water factor, atmospheric factor, biotic factors).
- Human influence on plants (choice of crop, choice of cultivation system, choice of seed, soil treatment, fertilization, nutrients, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, etc., sowing-season, depth, means and methods, quantity, transplanting, cultivation operations from germination to harvest).
- Harvesting – storage of products, handling, standardization and distribution of products.
Educational Goals
Introduction of students to topics concerning:
- the evolution of agriculture in modern Greece,
- the relationships of cultivated plants with the environment,
- effect of cultivation techniques on plants and
- climate effect on plant growth and development in cultivation operations from the preparation of the field for sowing to the disposal of the product.
