General

Course Contents

  • Gases: ideal gases, real gases, kinetic theory of gases, molecular speeds.
  • Liquids: surface tension, viscosity, vapor pressure, dielectric constant. Measurement of surface tension and viscosity.
  • Solids: basics of crystal structure, allotropic forms, amorphous solids.
  • Thermodynamics: thermodynamic functions (enthalpy, internal energy, entropy, free energy). Laws of Thermodynamics. Thermochemistry.
  • Dispersion systems: miscible liquids, partially miscible liquids, non miscible liquids and distribution law of Nernst. Colligative Properties. Phase Rule. Colloids.
  • Chemical Equilibrium: gas phase reactions in homogeneous solutions and heterogeneous chemical reactions, effect of the pressure and temperature on the equilibrium of chemical reactions.
  • Chemical kinetics: reaction rate, reaction order, reaction molecularity, reaction constant rate, integrated rate law (zero-order rate law, first-order rate law, second-order rate law), Arrhenius equation, collision theory, activated complex theory – activation energy, catalysis.
  • Introduction to Electrochemistry. Galvanic and electrolytic cells.

After the end of the course, students understand simple physicochemical phenomena, and can solve complex physicochemical exercises.
