Course Contents
- Nomenclature, definitions and terminology in the Science of Pesticide.
- Historical review of the discovery and use of Plant Protection Products and biocides.
- Pesticide label and elements of legislation.
- Standardization and methods of handling and applying them.
- Classification and description based on the target organism (e.g. insecticides, fungicides, herbicides) and their uses (in the seed, in the soil, spraying, etc.).
- Toxicological properties of pesticide and personal protective equipment.
- Ecotoxicity pesticide, effects on the environment and residues in agricultural products.
- Selectivity and toxicity pesticide and biocides (entry into the target organism, activation, metabolism, time and method of application, biochemical mode of action).
- Classification and description of insecticides (acaricides andnematicides) based on the biochemical mode of action (e.g. nervous system disruption, acetylcholinesterase inhibition, ion transport channels, chitin biosynthesis, muscular system, etc.).
- Classification and description of fungicides, based on their biochemical mode of action (e.g. inhibition of respiration, biosynthetic pathways, etc.).
- Classification and description of herbicides, based on their biochemical mode of action (e.g. inhibition of biosynthetic pathways, photosynthesis, etc.).
- Classification and description of phytoregulatory compounds.
- Classification and description of Biocides (mosquitocides, insecticides, etc.).
- Means aspects of pesticide phytoremediation such as phytodegradation, phytoextraction, phytoaccumulation etc.
- The use of biotechnology in pesticide bioremediation.
Educational Goals
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the concept and importance of Pesticide. More specifically, after the successful completion of all educational stages of the course to have the necessary knowledge so that they are able to:
- judge the benefits and risks arising from the use of plant protection products.
- describe the different categories of plant protection products based on the target organism and their biochemical mode of action.
- to recognize and evaluate the various forms of standardization of plant protection products.
- find and understand the information on the label of plant protection products.
- to perform calculations necessary for the precise application of plant protection products.
- to know the means of Personal Protection and to have understood the necessity of their environmentally friendly use.
- to know the means aspects of pesticide phytoremediation such as phytodegradation, phytoextraction, phytoaccumulation etc.
