Course Contents

Α. Theoretical Part of the Course

  • Methods ofgrapevine description and classification. Vine characteristics and ampelographic descriptor code of International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) Vine and Wine.Systematic classification of the family Vitaceae, genus Vitis. International ampelographiccollections and databases for variety identification.
  • Vine rootstocks – main characteristics & properties (detailed description of characteristics and resistance to pests, adaption in different soils, salinity, drought etc.). Introduction to the main rootstocks (VitisRiparia, VitisRupestris, VitisBerlandieri etc.).
  • Introduction to white and red winegrape varieties grown in Greece and in the world. Main characteristics & properties of varieties and PDO zones.
  • Grafting grapevine, clonal selection.
  • Parameters for selecting vineyard plots, winegrapevarieties and rootstocks for the creation of a commercial vineyards. Soil and climate requirements.
  • Vineyard establishment. Soil preparation, planting of new plants, etc

Β. Laboratory part

The laboratory exercises are based on the theoretical modules and include observation of ampelographic characteristics of the vine, grafting, vineyard establishment and management, visits to commercialvineyards, wineries etc.

Educational Goals

The course of ampelography aims to allow students

  • to gain the ability to implement methods for ampelographic, ampelometric, agrobiological and technological analysis of genus Vitis,
  • to get familiar with the ampelography collections and ampelographic descriptor code recognised by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV),
  • to learn the characteristics of rootstocks and grape varieties in order to select the appropriate combination forpest resistant and well developed plants,
  • to learn about graftingand clone selection,
  • to be able to select varieties suitable for the soil type, environmental conditions of a given wine region and choose the appropriate rootstock for a particular variety,
  • to conduct a feasibility studies for new vineyard development and prepare reports for planting recommendations,
  • to develop scientific and technical knowledge in order to establish, cultivate and managea commercial vineyard.
