Gounaris Yannis

Dr. Yannis Gounaris was born in Alistrati, Serres. He graduated from the Biology Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He holds a PhD in Plant Biochemistry from Lancaster University, England, as a Government Scholarship Foundation Fellow. Since 1985 he has worked as a Plant Molecular Biologist at the Institute of Microbiology of Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA, and at the Crop and Potato Research Institutes of the US Department of Agriculture, Pennsylvania and North Dakota, USA, respectively. Since 1996, he has been a professor of Molecular Biology at the Department of Agriculture of the University of Thessaly and in 2020 he was transferred to the Department of Agricultural Biotechnology and Oenology of the International University of Greece, in Drama, as the chair of the department.
His published research concerns the creation of mutant plants for improved production of aromatic and medicinal substances and for disease resistance, articles on the mechanism of evolution, mapping of genetic material, as well as biochemical research articles on the photosynthetic apparatus, plant hormones, sugars and other cellular components. He is highly trained in the techniques of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry. He has been teaching for thirty years the courses of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at undergraduate and postgraduate level, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, General Biology, Bioinformatics, Genetics and Databases. He is the author of four textbooks on these subjects. His most recent interests are in the applications of digital technology in biological research and in particular in the mechanisms of evolution and in silico digital imaging of enzymatic reactions and genetic functions. He is the father of four children and is particularly interested in the technological development of Northern Greece.
